A pedestrian passage will improve accessibility of the platforms. In addition, a bicycle tunnel will be constructed beneath the centre of the tracks, running from the city concourse.

The plans, which were designed by architect Koen van Velsen, will take advantage of space beneath the station. Construction works are set to begin in 2020 and are expected to be completed by 2023. According to the Groningen Spoorzone website, the official permit for the works should be granted by October of 2019.

In de NS -en Arriva dienstregelingen en treinbestemmingsborden wordt alleen Groningen getoond. Wanneer NS en Arriva het achtevoegsel Hoofdstation overnemen weet ik niet.

Station Groningen is altijd een 'kopstation' geweest. Dat houdt in dat een reis altijd begint of eindigt op het station, of dat reizigers altijd moeten overstappen. Na de ombouw van het Hoofdstation is het de bedoeling dat de regionale treinen kunnen doorrijden. Treinen vanuit Veendam rijden dan via Groningen door naar Delfzijl, en andersom.
